Graduates can teach in schools, colleges, universities; work as junior researchers in research and design industry institutes; as specialists at enterprises for the processing of oil, gas, coal and polymers, elastomers, paints and varnishes, propellants, solid and liquid rocket fuels; for the production and transportation of hydrocarbon raw materials and their rational use; at defense enterprises.
The faculty has an experienced teaching staff with academic degrees and titles.
The faculty includes 4 departments: Department of Organic Chemistry and Polymers, Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry, Department of Inorganic and Technical Chemistry, Department of Chemical Technology and Petrochemistry. The faculty has 2 research institutes and an accredited engineering laboratory.
Dates and facts
History
In the 70s of the XX century the Karaganda region was one of the leading in Kazakhstan on the development of chemical science. Many factories operated in Karaganda, where chemists were required. In addition, there was a strong lack of chemistry teachers at secondary schools in Karaganda and in the whole region. All this served as the basis for the creation of such an educational structure that would provide the region with qualified personnel.
In this regard, it was decided to open a chemical faculty in 1972 on the basis of the Department of Chemistry of the Natural Faculty of the Karaganda State Pedagogical Institute for the training of specialists in chemistry.
Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Rashida Gazizovna Omarova was appointed the first Dean of the Chemical Faculty, who headed the faculty for 20 years. The first heads of the departments were Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, USSR State Prize Laureate, First Rector of Karaganda State University Evney Arystanovich Buketov, Associate Professor Yerken Gafurovich Gafurov, Associate Professor Akbet Amanbaevna Kozhakova.
An important role in the organization, formation, determination and development of scientific directions of the faculty belongs to the first rector of the university, leading metallurgist academician Ye.A. Buketov. Being the rector and heading the department of physical chemistry in 1976, he organized for the first time in Kazakhstan the scientific school of chemistry and technology of chalcogenes and chalcogenides, as well as in 1981 the laboratory of the same name.
In 1978 the All-Union meeting on the Chemistry and Technology of Chalcogenes and Chalcogenides was organized for the first time on the basis of the Chemical-Metallurgical Institute and the Karaganda State University, which was regularly held for many years.
At the same time, Academician Ye.A. Buketov was the head of the project «Theoretical foundations of the processing of mineral raw materials and industrial products».
A great contribution to the formation of the Chemical Faculty (1983-1988) as one of the leading scientific centers of Kazakhstan was made by the rector, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Honored Scientist, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Zeynolla Muldakhmetovich Muldakhmetov.
In 1980-1982, vice-rector for scientific work, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor V.P. Zhuravlev opened the Department of Colloidal Chemistry and Ecology. At the same time research works on environmental protection began.
In 1982-1985, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Murat Zhurinovich Zhurinov was vice-rector for scientific and educational work, who opened the Department of Electrochemistry at the Chemistry Faculty in 1984.
Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Director of the Scientific Center of CIMC Abdrasul Abdashevich Zharmenov, head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry in 1984-1986, organized the scientific direction «The application of electrochemical methods in non-ferrous metallurgy».
A significant contribution to the development of the faculty was made by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Kurmanaliyev O.Sh, who was the Dean of the faculty and head of the Department of Organic Chemistry and Polymers. A kazakh branch, independent departments of quantum chemistry and electrochemistry were opened with the direct participation of O.Sh. Kurmanaliyev at the Chemistry Faculty.
