Information about the department:
The Department of Foreign Philology is the graduating department of E.A. Buketov KarU. The department trains specialists in the field of language and literature on the educational programs of Bachelor's degree 6B02303 "Foreign Philology (English)", 6B02303.1 "Foreign Philology (Chinese)" and Master's degree 7M02301 "Foreign Philology".
The training is carried out in two trajectories: literary studies and linguistics.
Students study the following disciplines:
- in the Bachelor's degree: "Business Foreign Language", "Text Linguistics", "Literature of the Studied Language", "Literary Editing", "Practicum in literary texts reading", "Stylistics", "Philological Analysis of Literary Text", etc.;
- in the Master's degree: "Professional Foreign Language", "Academic Scientific Writing", " Innovation in Linguistics and Literature Studies", "Applied Linguistics", "Value Dominants of Modern English Literature", etc.
To students of other educational programs of the faculty, the teaching staff of the department teaches: " “Fundamentals of The Theory of The Studied Language", "Literature of the Country of the Studied Language", "Theory and Practice of Intercultural Communications", "Second Foreign Language (Chinese)".
European and Oriental languages are taught at the faculty as the main and second foreign languages. Studying a second foreign language is mandatory and begins in the second year. The study of the second foreign language is compulsory and starts in the second year. The choice of language is based on students' wishes.
Students actively participate in academic mobility programs: Anshan Pedagogical University, Shenyang Pedagogical University, Shihezi University (People's Republic of China), Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, Tomsk State Pedagogical University (Russian Federation), Adam Mickiewicz University (Poland), Babes-Bolyai University (Romania), etc.
The teachers of the department are specialists who have great experience of working not only in our country but also abroad. Many of them have been trained in foreign universities. The department includes the holders of the title «The best teacher of the university», Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Isina G.I., Candidate of Philosophy, Associate Professor Kakzhanova F.A., a graduate of the scholarship «Bolashak» Omarova A.M.
The department is engaged in cognitive and functional-pragmatic research of language in the field of professional communication. Under the supervision of Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Isina G.I., Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Buketova N.I., Candidate of Philosophy, Associate Professor Kakzhanova F.A., PhD Zhuman A.K., the department implements research projects financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as within the framework of an intra-university grant.
In 2024, senior lecturer of the department Omarova A.M. became the recipient of an educational grant from the Hong Kong Baptist University for the Translation Studies doctoral program.
In the direction 7M02301 "Foreign Philology" the department implements a joint educational program with the Akhmet Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University.
The department organizes guest lectures and trainings by foreign professors (Ponomareva A.V., UCL University, London, Literary theory / Translation theory ; Dr. Rab Nawaz Lodhi, University of Central Punjab, Pakistan, Qualitative research design).
Graduates of the department successfully work in educational and humanitarian institutions, diplomatic departments, and commercial firms, in the sphere of translation services, mass-media, advertising, editorial, and publishing activities as philologists, editors, proofreaders, copywriters, applying their knowledge of English and Chinese languages in practice.
Dates and facts
History
Until 2018, the Department of Foreign Philology was part of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies. In 2018, the Department of Foreign Philology became independent.
In different years, the department was headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Tsai E.N., Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Isina G.I., Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, Associate Professor Kakzhanova F.A.
In 2013, a cooperation agreement was signed with Shihezi University (People's Republic of China), and the first students from China came to study at KSU.
In 2017, the first graduation of students of the educational program 6B02303.1 “Foreign Philology (Chinese)” took place.
Teachers:
Currently, the department employs 22 teachers, including doctors, candidates of sciences, and masters. The department invites foreign teachers of philology to cooperate.
Accreditation and Leadership:
The educational programs of the department are accredited by the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education "IQAA" and traditionally occupy high positions in the national ratings of IQAA and National Chamber of Entrepreneurs of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Atameken".
Employment:
Among the graduates of the department are natives of different regions of Kazakhstan, citizens of Russia, Tajikistan, Pakistan. The employment rate of graduates of the department was 89% in the bachelor's degree and 100% in master's studies.

6B02303 "Foreign Philology (English)": Bachelor's degree
The aim of the educational program is the professional training of specialists in the field of linguistics and literary studies, fluent in several foreign languages (English/German/French/Italian/Chinese), demonstrating knowledge of the main provisions and concepts in the theory and history of foreign language and literature, theory of communication, philological analysis and interpretation of the text, the current state and prospects of development of foreign philology.
6B02303.1 "Foreign Philology (Chinese)": Bachelor's degree
The educational program aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge about China, based on an in-depth study of the philological component of the Chinese cultural heritage. At the same time, the program provides for the formation of a holistic understanding of the cultural, ethnic, linguistic, social and other features of China with a parallel and comprehensive study of the Chinese language.
Graduates of both undergraduate programs receive a Bachelor of Linguistics degree.
7M02301 "Foreign Philology": Master's degree
The aim of the educational program is to train highly qualified researchers-philologists, teachers of the university, who possess productive technologies in the context of cognitive-linguocultural methodology of foreign language education.
Graduates of the Master's program receive Master of arts in philology degree.
