The Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science trains specialists in the field of digital technologies and robotics for business, IT companies, science and education. The department offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. Students of the department have the opportunity to study in two directions: Information and communication technologies and Pedagogical Sciences. As part of the first direction, the department offers to study algorithmization and programming in various languages and environments, work with databases, BigData, master computer graphics and modeling technologies, Web technologies, robotics, virtual and augmented reality technologies, and cybersecurity. In the second direction, the department teaches pedagogy, school computer science and educational robotics. The Master's and doctoral programs include a research-training module. Graduates of the department will be able to work in IT companies, educational schools and colleges, and if they have a master's degree and a doctor's degree, they will be able to teach at a university.
The scientific interests of the department are related to research in the field of mathematical modeling of objects and processes, data mining, information security risk assessment, as well as professional training of information profile specialists.
Dates and facts
The history
The history of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science begins in 1975, when the Department of Computational Mathematics was organized at the university. The initiator of the creation of the department and the first head was Professor, Ph.D. Almukhanbetov Naukhanbay Almukhanbetovich. Working together with the first teachers of the department Babaliev M. M., Zhanabekov Zh. Zh., Sagindykov Kh. M., Surtebaev M. M., Birzhanova Z. N., Dyusembina A. B., Balkybaeva S., he managed to provide effective training of specialists in the field of applied mathematics. The first trainees-researchers of the department were the future academician Smagulov Shaltay Smagulovich and Professor Muzdakbayev Mukhamedyar Muzdakbayevich.
Gradually, the department opened new specialties for that time "Applied Mathematics" and "Informatics" (mid-80s), "Information Systems" (2004), "Mathematical and Computer Modeling" (2011), in 2019 - "Informatics, ICT and Robotics", "Information Systems and Technologies" and "Informatics": Master's degree, in 2020 - doctoral program "Digital Pedagogy".
Students:
All educational programs of the department are in demand among applicants. Over the past three years, there has been an increase the number of enrolled students: in 2018 - 136 students, in 2019-160 students, in 2020-193 students; undergraduates: in 2018 – 9; in 2019-25, in 2020 – 35 undergraduates.
The department trains foreign students from such countries as Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, as well as students from many regions of Kazakhstan: Karaganda, East Kazakhstan, Zhambyl, West Kazakhstan, Kyzylorda, Turkestan.
Teachers:
The staff of the department includes 23 teachers, including candidates of sciences, PhD doctors, masters with basic education information systems, computer science, mathematics. Among the staff of the department there are 3 holders of the title "The best teacher of the University of the Republic of Kazakhstan"; 2 members of the International Informatization Academy; 2 winners of the A.Nobel Medal for contribution to the development of invention (Russia, Russian Academy of Natural History), the winner of the I International Competition of Higher achievements in Science and Education "Recognition" in the nomination "Scientist of the Year-2016".
Joint educational program:
Since 2019, a joint program for training undergraduates under the program 7M06109402-Information Systems and Technologies has been implemented with the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI" (Moscow, Russia).
A guest lecturer, PhD Selezneva Ruslana (Wyższa Szkoła Humanitas, Poland), visited the department with courses on BigData, Cloud computing.
Accreditation and leadership:
The educational programs of the department have the national accreditation of the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and occupy a worthy position in the national rankings: "Atameken" in 2020, the program 6B06103-Information systems takes the 5th place among 55 universities; the program 6B01505-Informatics takes the 3rd place among 25 universities. 2017-2022: “International Network Institute in the Field of Countering the Legalization of Proceeds from Crime and the Financing of Terrorism” is being implemented with the Federal Financial Monitoring Service of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, and the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations of the Russian Federation.

The Department has established cooperation with the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI" (Moscow, Russia), the Russian State Vocational Pedagogical University (Yekaterinburg, Russia), the International Training Center (Dusseldorf, Germany), Tomsk State University (Tomsk, Russia), the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (Kaliningrad, Russia), and the Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (Tomsk, Russia).
The department is constantly expanding cooperation with IT companies in the city. Currently, the department implements more than 10 cooperation agreements with major software development companies, such as "EPAM Kazakhstan" LLP, "Gexabyte" LLP, "Information Technology Center "WTO", "Center for Innovative Technologies "Orleu" LLP, "PrintShop" Advertising and Production Company, "iQ-SOLUTIONS" LLP in Astana, with city schools, etc. Representatives of companies are invited by the department to meet with students, to conduct seminars and master classes.
There are 4 branches of the graduating department on the basis of "Epam Kazakhstan" LLP, KSU School of Lyceum No. 66 and Secondary School No. 16, Boarding School "Information Technologies". For professional practice, there are 18 contracts with IT companies and enterprises of the city and region and more than 40 contracts with schools of the city.
Educational programs
6B01505 - Informatics: Bachelor's degree. The programme is related to the study of the basics of pedagogy, psychology, educational and information technologies. In the course of study the student will learn to carry out the process of teaching school informatics in accordance with the educational programme, use innovative techniques, methods and means of teaching informatics; apply modern means of evaluating the results of learning; master the methods of organising independent work and extracurricular activities of students. Students have an opportunity to study some subjects in English. Graduates will receive a Bachelor's degree in Education and will be able to work as teachers of informatics in educational institutions of different types.
6В06103 - Information Systems: Bachelor's degree. The programme is related to the study of high-level programming languages, database development technologies of information systems, study of technologies of the main directions of IT-industry, robotics and information security. In the course of study the student will acquire skills of development and administration of information systems, design of computer networks, development and implementation of software of different directions. Students have the opportunity to study part of the subjects in English. Graduates will receive a bachelor's degree in information and communication technologies and will be able to work as a programmer, database and information systems developer, content manager, system and network administrator, software tester, business analyst, software maintenance specialist.
6В06104 - Mathematical and Computer Modelling: Bachelor's degree. The programme is aimed at studying methods in the field of mathematical and computer modelling, computational mathematics, methods of mathematics and system programming, optimization and control algorithms, modelling of applied mathematics problems. In the course of study the student will learn to use methods of applied mathematics and computer science, mathematical modelling of scientific and technological processes, computer modelling, programming using different languages, modelling robotic systems, big data analysis. Graduates will receive a bachelor's degree in information and communication technologies and will be able to work as mathematical programmer, system analyst, system and network administrator, visualiser, computer designer.
6B06105 - Software Engineering: Bachelor of Science. During the course of study, the student will acquire skills in knowledge extraction, business intelligence, big data mining, blockchain; cloud technologies, artificial intelligence and robotics techniques for developing software systems. Will master algorithms and tools to develop secure client-server applications, including mobile, multimedia, Web applications, VR and AR applications, databases with information security requirements. Students have the opportunity to study all subjects in English in the 3rd and 4th years at Suleiman Demirel University (Almaty region, Kaskelen city). Graduates will receive a bachelor's degree in information and communication technologies and will be able to work as a software developer and architect, programmer, software tester, manager and architect of IT systems and projects, software quality manager.
7М01503 – Informatics: Master's programme. The programme is aimed at training masters who are able to conduct scientific research, apply information and communication technologies in the educational sphere of activity, monitor and manage the educational process. In the process of training the master's student will study technologies of organisation, planning and management of educational process of higher school, technologies of innovativeness, design and development of digital educational resources, will be able to apply pedagogical technologies and innovative methods of teaching in the field of IT. Graduates will receive a Master's degree in Pedagogical Sciences and will be able to teach at a higher education institution, engage in research activities, work as a secondary school teacher, college or university teacher, or manager in education.
7М06104 - Information Systems and Technologies: Master's programme (profile, 1 year). The programme is aimed at training Master's students with fundamental and applied knowledge in the fields of IT and digital technologies, research skills to carry out professional activities in the conditions of digitalisation of RK. In the process of training the master will learn to conduct research, will study software engineering technologies; methods, tools and technologies of designing mathematical, information and software information systems; methods of developing requirements and specifications of components of software products and information systems based on the analysis of user requests, models of the subject area. Students have the opportunity to study all subjects in English. Graduates will receive the degree of Master of Engineering and Technology in the educational programme ‘7M06104 - Information Systems and Technologies’ and will be able to work as a programmer, designer, software developer and tester, software architect, system analyst.
7М06101 - Information Systems and Technologies: Master's programme. The programme is aimed at training masters capable of conducting scientific research, possessing fundamental and applied knowledge in the fields of IT and digital technologies, research skills to carry out scientific, pedagogical and professional activities in the conditions of digitalisation of RK. In the course of study, a master's student will learn to conduct research, will study software engineering technologies; methods, tools and technologies of designing mathematical, information and software of information systems; methods of developing requirements and specifications of software product components and information systems based on the analysis of user requests, models of the subject area. Graduates will receive a Master of Engineering degree and will be able to teach at a higher education institution, engage in research activities, work as a programmer, designer, software developer and tester, software architect, systems analyst, secondary school teacher, college and university teacher.
8D01103 - Digital Pedagogy: Doctoral studies. The programme is aimed at training specialists skilled in digital educational technologies and modern methods of scientific research in the field of digital pedagogy. In the process of training, doctoral students study technologies of development and methods of application of methodological support in the educational process, taking into account the achievements of digital pedagogy, psychology, ICT and informatics. Graduates will receive the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and will be able to work as a teacher at a higher education institution, engage in research activities, work in state administration bodies, departments of education; in institutions of additional education; researcher, project manager, chief specialist, expert, researcher.
