The Department prepares international relations specialists, offers bachelor’s and master's degree programs. Students are offered three directions: «Theoretical and applied aspects of international relations», «Multilateral diplomacy and foreign policy», «National and regional Security». The training program includes relevant academic disciplines: «Fundamentals of Geopolitics», «Negotiation Techniques», «Multilateral Diplomacy», «Religious factor in International relations», «Gender factor in International Relations», «Institute of Political Leadership in International Relations», «Information Technologies in International Relations», «Applied Analysis of International Relations». Graduates of the department can work in state and local government bodies, local (Kazakh) and international companies; diplomatic missions and consular offices, non-profit organizations, analytical and consulting centers; PR agencies; research centers; mass media; educational institutions.
The areas of research interest of the department are related to the study of current problems of the world-historical process, the theory and history of international relations, world history, information technologies in international relations, regional studies. A special feature of the department is its interdisciplinary nature, which contributes to the formation of a holistic view of the modern world system based on a comprehensive analysis of global and regional processes.
Dates and facts
History
The Department of General History was established in 1966. It was founded by Associate Professor M. I. Boguslavsky (1914-1969), a well-known polonist, one of the co-authors of the three-volume history book of Poland published in 1950s. A. N. Telgarin became the second head of the Department of General History at the Pedagogical Institute, and the first head of the Department ever at the University in 1969-1979. In following years, Associate Professor M. Khassenov (1979-1989), Associate Professor N.M. Farfutdinov (1990-1994), Associate Professor M. V. Shlupikov (1994-1999), Acting Associate Professor L.A. Prokopenko (1999-2000), Associate Professor L.L. Baturina (2000-2005), Associate Professor A.K. Kapyshev (2005-2006), Associate Professor G.M. Smagulova (2006-2012), and Associate Professor B. T. Tuleuova (2012-2020) headed the department. Currently, Associate Professor Z.M. Kenzhegali heads the Department of World History and International Relations.
Since the department started preparing international relations specialists, in 2002 it has received a new name - World History and International Relations.
The teaching staff of the department together with international and foreign organizations actively participates in the organization processes and conduct of scientific and practical events.
In 2005, within the framework of the project «HESP Regional Seminar for Excellence Teaching» under the program of support for higher education of the Open Society Institute (Budapest, Hungary and the Kazakh-German University, Kazakhstan) was conducted the seminar for security research within the department;
In 2007, a seminar on OSCE issues was conducted in the department, which was organized on the basis of Academician Ye.A. Buketov Karaganda State University together with representatives of the OSCE Center in Kazakhstan and experts of the OSCE Research Center of Hamburg (Germany).

The department employs doctors, candidates, masters of Science, holders of the republican title «Best University Teacher».

The growth of the student body over the past five years has been 80 %.

The department implements multilingual training programs in Kazakh, Russian and English.
Graduates of the master's degree program have the opportunity to continue their studies in the doctoral program (PhD) at the faculty under the program 6D020300-History or in other universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the target training 6D020200-International relations.
Accreditation and leadership:
The programs of the department have national accreditation of Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education and occupy worthy positions in national ratings.
The educational program of the department took the 2nd place in the Republic of Kazakhstan according to the National Ranking of educational programs of higher education institutions of the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs «Atameken» in 2020.

Educational programs
6B03105-International Relations: Bachelor's degree. The educational program is aimed at training professionals in the field of international relations who have modern system knowledge and the necessary competencies, who are able to navigate the complex realities of the modern world and independently make adequate decisions. In addition to the traditional disciplines of history and theory of international relations, national security and foreign policy, students of the program study a range of issues of regional studies. Students of the program have the option of choosing an additional specialization in mediation and public relations. This increases the competitiveness of graduates of the educational program. A special feature of the educational program is the multilingual nature of the training.
Graduates of the specialty in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomatic missions of Kazakhstan abroad, in specialized international organizations; can work as specialists, referents, experts, communication managers, translators in government agencies; work in leading domestic companies with close ties with foreign partners; in representative offices of foreign countries, in large scientific and analytical centers; in the media.
7M03106401 – International Relations: Master's degree. The program is aimed at training specialists for foreign policy and foreign economic spheres. Undergraduates will acquire the skills necessary for activities in the field of international cooperation and regional studies; the competencies necessary for a broad understanding of economic, legal, political and social transformations in global and regional contexts. The program prepares specialists to participate in the work of government agencies, intergovernmental organizations, NGOs and international corporations. A special feature of the educational program is the multilingual nature of the training.
