The Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry trains specialists in the field of chemical, metallurgical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical industries; education, sci-ence and ecology in two educational programs «Chemistry» and «Fundamental Chemistry» and offers the possibility of multilingual education at three levels: Bachelor's, Master's and PhD studies.
The students of the Department have the opportunity to study in two directions: «Physico-chemical analysis» and «Physical and Computer Chemistry». The curricu-lum includes such topical disciplines as «Computational nanotechnology in chemis-try», «Quantum mechanics and computer chemistry», «Molecular design of chemi-cal materials», «Conformational analysis of organic compounds».
Graduates of the Department will be able to work in production laboratories of ana-lytical, environmental, customs, sanitary-epidemiological, certification services; re-search organizations (institutes, laboratories) of chemical, petrochemical, environ-mental, metallurgical, pharmaceutical profile; in educational institutions and edu-cation departments.
The scientific interests of the Department are related to the study of topical prob-lems of chemistry: EPR spectroscopy and quantum chemistry of the structure and reactivity of free radicals; physicochemical studies of chalcogenides of the copper subgroup and metals of the first transition series; quantum chemical studies of liq-uid crystal compounds.
The department has a computer chemistry laboratory equipped with a server, workstations, software for performing computer modeling of chemical compounds and reactions, performing quantum chemical calculations.
Dates and facts
History
The Department of Physical Chemistry was opened in 1977, the first head of which was the first rector of the Karaganda State University, academician Ye.A. Buketov. The first group of the Department included the Dean of the Chemistry Faculty Omarova R.G. and students of Buketov Ye.A., invited to the university from the Chemical and Metallurgical Institute: Valikhanova N.Kh., Zhambekov M.I., Kozorin L.G., Egorova I.V., Novik S.N., Kalanova Sh.M. A little later, after defending his Candidate dissertation in Moscow Masalimov A.S., Nurgaliyev B.Z., Zhumadilov E.K., Makarov G.V. began to work at the Department.
In the 80s at the base of the Department of Physical Chemistry a problem research laboratory «Chemistry and Technology of Chalcogenes and Chalcogenides», the Department of Colloidal Chemistry and Ecology (head of the Department, Professor Zhuravlev V.P.), the Department of Electrochemistry (head of the Department, Professor Zhurinov M.Zh.), the second in the Soviet Union Department of Quantum Chemistry (Head of the Department, Professor Minayev B.F.).
As a result of the optimization of the structure of higher educational institutions of Kazakhstan in 1995 the Departments of physical and quantum chemistry were again combined under the leadership of Doctor Chemical Sciences, Professor Masalimov A.S.
In 1997 the Departments of Quantum, Physical and Analytical Chemistry were combined and the Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry was formed. During the existence of the Department a doctoral dissertations were defended by Minayev B.F., Makarov G.V., Sharipov M.Sh., Masalimov A.S., Beznosyuk S.A., Irgibayeva I.S., Amerkhanova Sh.K., Nikolsky S.N.
More than forty people defended their candidate dissertations, including the current teachers of the Department: Khalitova A.I., Abulyaissova L.K., Nikolsky S.N., Pustolaikina I.A., Kasymova M.S., Kurmanova A.F., Kutzhanova K. Zh. and others. It should be noted that a significant part of dissertations were defended in large centers of science and education (Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds of Russian Academy of Sciences (INEOS RAS), Institute of Organic Chemistry named after N.D. Zelinsky).
From the beginning of the foundation of the Department its heads were: Academicians Ye.A. Buketov, Z.M. Muldakhmetov, Professor V.G. Shkodin, M.Z. Ugorets, M.Sh. Sharipov, A.D. Kagarlitsky, and A.S. Masalimov. At present the Department is headed by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Nikolsky S.N.
Students:
The demand for the programs of the Department is evidenced by the growth of the contingent of students, which has increased more than 5 times over the past 5 years. 29 students of the Altai State University (Russia, Barnaul) were trained in the framework of mobility in the disciplines «Spectral analysis» (Lecturer Professor Nikolsky S.N.) and «Physicochemical methods of analysis» (Professor Khalitova A.I.)
Employment:
The employment rate of graduates is 100%.
Teaching staff:
The share of teachers of the Department with academic degrees is 90%. Among the teachers there are 2 holders of the title «The best University teacher of the Republic of Kazakhstan» (Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Masalimov A.S. and Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Professor Abulyaissova L.K.), holder of a state scholarship for young scientists (Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Pustolaikina I.A.), 3 winners of the O.Sh.
