The Department of Translation Theory and Practice is a graduate department and trains specialists in the field of linguistics and translation studies within the education program of the bachelor's degree 6B02301-Translation Studies.
Training of specialists is carried out within two directions: "Translation in the field of written and business communication" and "Translation in the field of oral and professional communication". The curriculum includes such subjects as practical phonetics, grammar, the practice of oral and written speech, listening to foreign language speech, stylistics, lexicology, morphology, and syntax. Students learn to work with scientific, technical, legal, economic, and commercial documents, and learn the specifics of translating diplomatic texts, information technology texts, etc. Within the framework of literary translation, students study the translation of prose, poetry, drama and literary reviews. Simultaneous translation training is also in place. Students who want to master this specialization are selected based on the results of training, subject-oriented tests and interviews.
Students learn two foreign languages to choose from: German, French, Turkish, and Chinese. The study of a second foreign language is mandatory and begins with the 2nd year.
At the end of the program, graduates work as translators, editors, are in charge of external relations departments, teach foreign languages in educational centers.
The research work of the department is related to the study of current problems of interlanguage and intercultural communication, translation studies, the theory and practice of translation. Currently, the department is developing a grant project of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Facilitators in advanced training of teachers in blended learning: efficiency assessment, methodology, vectors of competence development". Background information
The University has been training translators since 2004. The Faculty of Foreign Languages has trained more than 600 highly qualified translators. Today, the faculty is one of the major centers of the republic in control of the training of competitive translation personnel.
Students:
The demand for the program "Translation Studies" is quite high. Over the past five years, the student body has doubled. Today, 157 students are enrolled in this program. These include foreign citizens from India, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan.
Employment:
Our graduates are highly employable in the labor market. Their employment rate for several years has been 85%. Today, graduate translators work in Nur-Sultan, Almaty, and other major cities of Kazakhstan, Russia, Germany, Spain, Canada, Poland, the Czech Republic, India, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan.
Student exchange:
Students of the department actively engage in academic mobility programs and study at foreign partner universities: Shihezi University (China), Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University (Russia), Moscow State Linguistic University (Russia), Belarusian State University (Belarus), Charles University (Czech Republic).
The department consists of experienced teachers who have completed internships in the countries of the languages taught, are holders of the republican title "Best University Teacher" (Associate Professor Shelestova T. Yu.).
Accreditation and leadership:
The program "Translation Studies" is accredited by the National Kazakhstan Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education.
Over the past three years, the educational program "Translation Business" has been among the top five in the national rating of programs of the Kazakhstan Independent Agency for Quality Assurance.

The department cooperates with companies interested in the employment of translators. These include schools, universities, language centers, translation agencies, manufacturing companies such as Arcelor Mittal Temirtau, and Hegelmann Transport. The permanent partners of the department are the Association of Professional Translators and Translation Companies, the Chamber of Commerce of the Karaganda region.
Educational programs
6В02301-Translation Studies: Bachelor degree. In the course of training, a student will learn how to carry out written and oral translations in the various areas of activity. The program is related to the study of the theory and practice of interpretation and translation, the basics of translation notation in the course of consecutive interpretation, literary and technical translation. Students are required to study a second foreign language at the student's discretion: English, German, French, and Chinese. Graduates receive an academic degree of Bachelor of Humanities in the specialty "Translation Studies" and will be able to work in the following positions: translator-referent, guide-interpreter, interpreter, technical communicator (writer, editor), head of the department, employee of the Department of External Relations in cultural institutions, international organizations, various information and analytical services, embassies and representative offices, ministries, tourism agencies, publishing houses, translation companies and other organizations and enterprises.
