The Department of Geography trains specialists in the field of education and offers bachelor's and master's degree programs.
Students of the department have the opportunity to study on four trajectories. The training program includes such relevant disciplines as "Local History", "Aerospace methods of geographical research", "Geomorphology", "Methods of teaching geography in the context of the updated content of education". Students have the opportunity to get additional education by taking a special course.
Graduates of the department will be able to carry out design and survey research, fundamental and applied scientific and geographical projects, participate in the work of nature protection and environmental management bodies, conduct environmental and geographical monitoring of the environment, and work in educational organizations.
The scientific interests of the department are related to geoecological research, environmental protection and the study of modern man-made processes.

Due to a shortage of geography specialists in the Central and Northern regions of Kazakhstan, in 1990, candidate of geographical sciences and associate professor Muratkhan Kozhakmet established and headed the Department of Geography at the Biological Faculty (now the Biological and Geographical Faculty) of Karaganda State University. |

In the full-time program for the specialty «010-Geography» the first 50 students were accepted: 25 students in the Kazakh department and 25 students in the Russian department. |

Students:
The number of students enrolled in the academic programs of the Department of Geography has been steadily increasing year by year. For instance, the number of students in the «6B01511 - Geography-History» program grew from 23 to 110 students between the 2017 and 2024 academic years. Additionally, there is growing demand for both bachelor's and master's degree programs.
Educational programs:
The department offers traditional groups with academic programs taught in Kazakh and Russian. Additionally, students have the opportunity to attend guest lectures in English.
Accreditation and leadership:
All academic programs of the Department have successfully passed accreditation by the independent agencies for quality assurance in education, «IQAA» and «ARQA».
The educational programs of the Department of Geography consistently rank in the top positions in the «IQAA» and «Atameken» rankings.

The Department of Geography has established partnerships with many leading universities both in neighboring countries and abroad. Among them are Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia), Altai State University (Russia), the University of Navarra (Spain), Atatürk University (Turkey), I. Arabaev Kyrgyz State University (Kyrgyzstan), and Mirzo Ulughbek National University of Uzbekistan.
Academic mobility:
Students can effectively take advantage of the academic mobility program for both academic and research purposes. Partner universities for academic mobility include: Abai KazNPU, Al-Farabi KazNU, South Kazakhstan State University, Belarusian State University (Republic of Belarus), Tomsk State University, Orenburg State University, Perm National Research University (Russia), Women's National Pedagogical University, Kyzylorda University named after Korkyt Ata, and Kokshetau University named after Ch. Ualikhanov.
Educational programs
6B05203-Geography: Bachelor's degree. The program is related to the study of natural phenomena on the globe, topo-and geodetic survey and mapping. During the training, the student will learn how to take pictures of the area, create digital maps, and navigate the terrain.
Graduates will receive a bachelor's degree in natural science and will be able to work as experts in organizations of nature management, environmental protection, as well as in educational institutions.
6B01510-Geography: Bachelor's degree. The program is related to the study of methods of teaching geographical disciplines. In the course of training, the student will receive theoretical training in the field of geography, master modern technologies of teaching geography. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Education degree and will be able to work as geography teachers at schools and colleges.
6В01511-Geography-History: Bachelor's degree. The program is related to the study of methods of teaching geographical and historical disciplines. During the course, the student will receive theoretical training in geography and history. Graduates will receive a bachelor's degree in education and will be able to work as teachers of geography and history in schools, colleges, and specialists in local history museums.
7М01506-Geography: Master's degree. The program is related to the study of global problems of geographical science. In the course of training, a postgraduate student will master modern methods of geographical research, management psychology and pedagogy of higher education. Graduates will receive an academic degree Master of Pedagogical Sciences and will be able to work at general education schools, colleges and universities.
