The history of the Department of Foreign Languages dates back to the founding of the university, where many teachers began their career, and formed the teaching staff of the Faculty of Foreign Languages in 1998.
The Department of Foreign Languages provides educational services for students in the educational programs of the non-linguistic profile of the Bachelor's and Master's degree of the university. Teaching is conducted in English, German, French and Chinese in accordance with the Pan-European Standard of Language Competencies. The students, trained by the teachers of the department, adequately represent the university at the Olympiads in foreign languages of the regional and republican level.
The scientific interests of the department are presented to the current problems of language education, scientific and methodological support of foreign language training in the system of continuing and vocational education.
The professorial-teaching staff of the department pays a great attention to the creation of a high-quality base of educational and methodological support, continues to develop educational and methodological complexes in the disciplines of the department, educational and methodological publications, including electronic media provision, video lectures and mass open online courses. Over the past ten years, teachers have co-authored more than 50 educational publications (textbooks, manuals, electronic programs), to complete the educational and methodological complexes of foreign editions used in the educational process.
Dates and facts
History
The training of specialists in foreign languages began in 1991 at the department of foreign languages at the Faculty of Philology. The first enrollment was carried out for the specialty "German language" in the amount of 20 people. In the 90s, the need for specialists with knowledge of foreign languages increased sharply, which caused the need to transform the existing department of foreign languages in 1994 into an independent faculty of foreign languages. The first dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages was Doctor of Philology, Professor N.I. Buketova.
The formation and rapid development of the faculty is associated with the name of Doctor of pedagogical sciences, Professor B.A. Zhetpisbayeva, who headed the faculty from 1998 to 2019.
Professor G.K. Tleuzhanova, Ph.D., associate professor V.O. Ten, Ph.D., professor F.A. Kakzhanova, senior teachers B.Zh. Zhankina, Zh.A. Kagazbayev, L.A. Turumbetova, R.Zh. Dzhangunakova, I.V. Rosokhaalso observed the beginnings of the faculty. During the existence of the faculty, changes in its structure have repeatedly occurred: at different times, the heads of the departments worked Ph.D., associate professor F.A. Kakzhanova, D.Sc., professor Sh.M. Mazhitaeva, D.Sc., professor G.I. Isina, Ph.D. S.Kh. Zhakupova, Ph.D. Z.M. Mazhit, Ph.D. U.I. Kopzhasarova, Ph.D. E.A. Uteubaeva, associate professors Zh.A. Kagazbaev, M.U. Nurzhanova, B.K. Ayazbekova.
A small then team of teachers managed to successfully overcome all the difficulties of the organizational stage and lay the foundations for the future promising faculty. The faculty began with the existence of only one department of Romano-Germanic philology, headed by Zh.A. Kagazbayev.
The first graduation in the amount of 63 people was carried out in 1996 in the specialties “German language”, “English language”. As the faculty developed, new specialties were opened; a multilevel education model was introduced:
• 1991 - German language
• 1992 – English language
• 1996 – French language
• 1999 - Foreign Philology (English Philology, German Philology)
• 2001 - French Philology
• 2001 - Translation Studies
• 2012 - Chinese Philology.
Since 2006, the faculty has begun training masters in the following specialties:
• Foreign language: two foreign languages (2006)
• Foreign Philology (2009)
In 2013, a cooperation agreement was signed with Shihezi University (PRC).
In 2014, a doctoral program was opened in the specialty 6D011900 - Foreign language: two foreign languages.
During its short history, the faculty has trained more than 5,000 school teachers, university professors, philologists, translators who meet the needs of the region in highly qualified specialists with knowledge of foreign languages. Citizens of Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China, Turkey, and Italy are among the graduates of the faculty of different years. Faculty graduates successfully work in all regions of Kazakhstan, countries of near and far abroad as teachers of foreign languages, teachers of higher educational institutions, translators and specialists of various levels in the Embassies of the United States, Germany, France, in international missions accredited in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Teaching staff:
The educational process is provided by highly qualified teaching staff that has completed internships in the countries of the languages studied. Among them there are 10 holders of the republican title "The Best Teacher of the University", Doctors of Science and PhD, Candidates of Sciences and Associate Professors and Masters of Science.
The faculty constantly employs foreign teachers from Germany, France, China, South Korea, Italy and Turkey: K.Buck (Germany), T.Shpicker (Germany), V. Sartor (USA); D. Greham (USA), Paolo Mangrazzi (Italy), H.Spencer (USA), Ch. Kurt (Turkey), M. Gajon (France), A.Ergun (Turkey) etc.
Students:
In recent years, the contingent of students has been more than 2000 people, including the "Altyn Belgi" owners and holders of an educational grant. Along with students from various regions of Kazakhstan, foreign students from China, Russia, and Uzbekistan study at the faculty. There is an annual growth in the contingent of students, as well as an indicator of the demand for graduates in the labor market. More than 80% of graduates find work easily in the first three months after graduation.

Academic Mobility:
Students and undergraduates study at leading universities in Germany, Spain, China, Russia, Romania, USA, France and Czech Republic. Annually the degree of participation in academic mobility programs is more than 20%.
Dissertation Council:
The faculty has a dissertation council for the program "Foreign language: two foreign languages".
Accreditation and Leadership:
The faculty's programs are accredited by the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education. They occupy high positions in the national rankings of universities: undergraduate programs: "Translation Studies", "Foreign Philology"; Master's Programs "Foreign language: two foreign languages", "Foreign philology" were included in the top three according to the version of the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education; two programs are highly rated in the rating of employers "Atameken": "Foreign language: two foreign languages", "Foreign philology".
Projects:
Currently, scientists of the faculty are implementing 5 scientific projects related to the study of foreign language teaching, SMART- and CLIL-technology, non-formal education.
Partners:
The faculty cooperates with leading universities and organizations: the German Academic Exchange Service "DAAD", the Society for Support and the Evolution of German Language "Goethe-Institut", the French Alliance, the Linguistic Center at the French Embassy in Kazakhstan, the British Council, etc. As part of the cooperation, the implementation of guest lectures of foreign scientists and conducting of joint research is practiced.
Alumni Association
The Alumni Association of the Faculty of Foreign Languages was founded in 2006 and today has more than 1000 members. The Association operates on the basis of voluntariness, equality of its members, self-government, accountability, publicity. Its activity is aimed at maintaining the connection between graduates of different generations, increasing the prestige of the status of graduates of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, supporting student initiatives and faculty staff.
