MEETING OF STUDENTS WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE PEOPLE'S HEADQUARTERS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

A meeting of students with representatives of the People's Headquarters for the Construction of Nuclear Power Plants was held at the Karaganda Research University of Buketov. Particular attention was paid to the upcoming referendum and issues of developing nuclear energy in Kazakhstan.

According to the head of the Scientific and Technical Center for Non-Destructive Testing (STC NMKI) E. L. Ermakov, today Kazakhstan is experiencing a shortage of electricity and is forced to import it from neighboring countries, which creates additional economic and energy risks.

"Currently, the electricity deficit is about two gigawatts, and if 10 years ago we only talked about energy imbalance and deficit, today this day has already arrived. This indicates that there is no energy security in Kazakhstan, and it is one of the key factors for development, and in order for us to confidently develop technologies, medicine, and the social sphere, we need to acquire this energy security,” he explained.

It was also noted that the population has questions about waste disposal - they are stored in special packaging in special rooms under strict control. In addition, according to Evgeny Leonidovich, during the operation of coal-fired stations, a large amount of slag is formed that pollutes the atmosphere, while modern reactor installations are built exclusively in containments - massive sealed shells that will prevent the release of radioactive substances into the atmosphere in the event of an accident.

“Nuclear fuel is no longer radioactive waste, as it was 20 years ago. Today, technologies for the processing of spent nuclear fuel are actively used for its further use in new-generation reactors,” he noted.

Nuclear energy, as emphasized by the meeting participants, is one of the most progressive sources for ensuring sustainable energy supply. The experience of advanced countries demonstrates that nuclear power plants are capable of not only successfully coping with the growing demand for electricity, but also reducing carbon emissions, which is especially important in the context of global climate change.

"I would like to separately note that in addition to ensuring energy security, jobs will be created, the use of peaceful atoms in medicine and other areas will become more accessible, new technologies will be developed, and much more. Thus, in conclusion, I would like to say that nuclear power plants are environmentally friendly, safe, and economical," concluded Yermakov E. L.

During the event, the head of the Student Parliament, the branch of the MK "Zhastar Ruhy" Rakishev Ernar thanked the representatives of the People's Headquarters for the construction of the nuclear power plant for organizing the meeting and explaining all the nuances in detail.

"On behalf of the student youth, I would like to say that we fully support this initiative. I am confident that the construction of the nuclear power plant will make a great contribution to the development of the country," he noted.

At the initiative of the Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, a republican referendum on the issue of building a nuclear power plant will be held in the country on October 6.

The Chairman of the Committee on Social and Cultural Development of the Majilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Aimagambetov A.K., noted that the future of Kazakhstan depends on each of us, so it is important not only to point out problems, but also to participate in their solution. In this regard, taking part in the upcoming referendum is the duty of every Kazakhstani.
